About inKlein Design

What do we do?

At inKlein we design and manufacture a unique eco knitwear and apparel collection, for man and baby, in the Okanagan, B.C., Canada. Our philosophy is to manufacture ethically, sustainably and uphold Fair Trade policies. We are constantly striving towards a more sustainable business approach, through careful material selection and sourcing. Ensuring our product is kind to you now and your future.

Our knitwear collections are created using only the very best, fine and rare natural fibres in the world; natural baby alpaca, qiviut and bison. The yarn is used in its natural colour, un-dyed and un-bleached, and only procured from sustainable sources.

Our fabric apparel and accessories collections are created from certified organic wool, natural bamboo and organic hemp and silk mixes.

Each design is a unique fusion of ‘heritage meets west coast’; some pieces are simple, some pieces are fun and some pieces are for those that like to stand out in a crowd. All pieces are practical, wearable and finished to the highest standard, producing a garment you will cherish and use over and over again.

Who are we?

inKlein design is owned and run by husband and wife team, Sigurdur (Siggi) Klein and Leona Klein. We are a small manufacturing company located in Beautiful British Columbia, Canada.

Siggi is Icelandic and his love of nature and the outdoors stems from growing up amidst the dramatic landscapes and seascapes of Iceland. Spending holidays at the family summer house situated at the base of volcanic Mount Hekla, fishing in crystal clear glacial rivers and exploring over rugged molten lava beds formed from past volcanic eruptions. No matter what the season, Icelandic weather frequently brings the need for warm clothing. If only the yarns used to make Siggi’s childhood under-layers had been this soft and luxurious! As well as heading the company Siggi also looks after all the technical ‘stuff’, and makes great coffee.

Leona is Orcadian, from the Orkney Islands, an archipelago of around 70 islands off the north coast of Scotland. It is here, as a small child, she learned to knit and sew from the knees of her mother and grandmother. Her designs subtly reflect the rich heritage which is abound in this part of the world. Leona later built on her childhood skills gaining a Bsc in Design & Manufacture at Heriot Watt University. These beautiful, windswept islands also require a warm jumper to be readily on hand. When not in the workshop Leona takes full advantage of Siggi’s coffee pot!

Our Materials

Baby Alpaca – natural organicBaby Alpaca

Enwrapped in Baby Alpaca, wish upon a star!

Baby Alpaca is produced from fibre gathered from the alpaca’s first fleece. The first fleece yields the finest fibres. Baby Alpaca is lighter and 20% warmer than wool, doesn’t pill like cashmere and is hypo-allergenic. There are around 40 different natural colours of alpaca fleece and by segregating the shorn fleeces into same colour bundles a wonderful natural colour palette of yarn is created, where all colours complement one another and is kind to our environment.

inKlein design source Baby Alpaca from the highest mountain pastures of The New World, Peru and it’s partners produce according to organic and fair trade procedures. This Baby Alpaca product range is free from artificial toxins, from pasture land through to wearer.

Qiviut – hand combed (limited edition)Qiviut

Enveloped in Qiviut, dreams can come true!

Qiviut is the name given to fibre of the under coat of Musk Ox and considered one of the finest fibres in the world. It is as light as a cloud, eight times warmer than wool, doesn’t pill like cashmere, is hypo-allergenic and doesn’t shrink when washed. Musk oxen need this super fibre to keep warm in Arctic temperatures that frequently dip below -40 degrees.

inKlein design only use hand combed Qiviut, which is Qiviut gathered from combing the animal in shedding season. Combed fibre is the highest quality as each staple is at optimum length, unlike shorn fibres, increasing tensile properties of the spun yarn. We never use fibre recovered from culling programmes. As there is only around 200lbs of combed Qiviut fibre available in the world annually, and we only have a small part of that, this is an exclusive limited edition product range.

Bison – hand combed (limited edition)

Encased in Bison, forever true!

Bison fibre is gathered from the undercoat of the Bison. Bison grow an undercoat to keep warm in the winter and in spring, as temperatures rise, they no longer need the extra warmth and naturally shed their extra hair. Bison fibre is silky to touch, doesn’t pill like cashmere, is extremely warm, is hypo-allergenic and machine washable. Due to fibre availability this is also an exclusive limited edition product range.

Wool – certified organicWool

Enfolded in Wool, the heat is on!

Premier organic wool fabric woven from fine grade fibre sheared from merinos grazing organically managed pastures and processed using the best methods in accordance with the Organic Trade Associations, Fibre Processing Standards.

Wool remains one of the most versatile fibres and has been used by mankind to keep warm since the beginning of time.

Bamboo

Bamboo is the world’s fastest growing plant and grows cleanly without the need to use pesticides or chemicals. Bamboo is more efficient than trees, taking in carbon dioxide and breathing out oxygen.

Bamboo fibres are spun into luxurious fabrics which are soft, breathable, hypo-allergenic, absorbent and anti-bacterial. And at the end of a bamboo garments life it is 100% biodegradable.

Buttons - Corozo (Tagua Nut)

Bejeweled in Corozo, sparkle without the glitter!thumb_dsc01103.jpg

inKlein design use natural, sustainable buttons on their products. Corozo (Tagua Nut) Buttons are made from the nuts of the Ivory Nut Palm tree, which is found in the tropical rain forests of South America. The harvesting of Corozo nuts provide an economic resource to areas that otherwise may see valuable natural rainforests cleared for agricultural purposes.
